Finding Thanks This Thanksgiving

2020 has been a difficult a year to say the least – a global pandemic, a bruising election and divisive aftermath, and a disrupted economy with many Americans out of work, or cobbling together part-time jobs to ensure that the bills get paid.

Traditionally Thanksgiving was an opportunity to get together with family and friends to watch football, revisit real or perceived slights from relatives, to brag about the accomplishments of our offspring, and ditto for promotions at work or new jobs. Oh, and to eat too much.

Due to the pandemic, many among us have lost our routines, our sources of social engagement, and our very sense of our place in the world. Many have lost jobs, and too many have lost loved ones. 2020 is testing all of us… some more than others to be sure, but all of us are impacted.

Now along comes Thanksgiving, reminding us about how much has changed, and offering spiritual famine where a feast for the soul should be. And yet, it is crucial that we take stock of what we can be thankful for. Maybe it’s just a kernel, but every kernel offers hope, the promise of growth, the gift of sustenance.

The Pandemic has offered/allowed (okay, forced!) many of us to  put aside grievances, resentments and regrets, and to focus on that we have, and to be damn grateful for it!

What am I thankful for this Thanksgiving? First and foremost, my wonderful husband of 30 years; our amazing son Jared; the remarkable recovery from an accident of my brother and sister-in-law and the network of miracle workers that made it happen; re-connecting with friends via the phone and ZOOM and light-hearted video chats; the outdoors, always; music; a warm meal; safe shelter.  I am so thankful for the people who have made me laugh this year… it is the ultimate lid-lifter! I’m thankful for all of you for being part of my world and allowing me to be part of yours.

I would love to hear what you are Thankful this Thanksgiving.

I hope this article sparks a light that illuminates all that you love and cherish.

Wishing you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!
